I gotta report on my experience with magnesium: just got through first trimester of my fifth pregnancy. With the first four pregnancies I experience extreme nausea for the first 12 weeks. For this fifth pregnancy, and after using magnesium oil everyday starting from the day I found out I was pregnant, no nausea and most other pregnancy-related symptoms also relieved! I had to use a lot (at least 20 sprays when dosage said 66mg per four sprays). Once, when I changed brands I began to feel all pregnancy symptoms returning, I realized the new brand was a much lower dosage and that was why it wasn't working. When I returned to former dosage, I felt great again! Another time, I stopped taking it for five days and symptoms returned. Anyway, it definitely worked for me! It was amazing!

I have tried both of Magnesium oxide and Magnesium citrate. Magnesium oxide: I found it really helpful to relax and sleep deeply when I had taken it 500 mg pills for 7 days and then I have had to stop taking it because I began to feel lazy and idle after the six day.

Nowadays, I am taking Magnesium citrate effervescent powder sachets 2125 mg each sachet once daily because I have lumbar spine vertebrae injury of 3 herniated discs and I take it with Calcium capsules, Vitamin D3 pills and Vitamin B complex pills. I have noticed that Magnesium citrate loosens my stool but it doesn't get me lazy nor idle.

This is my experience with both of them.

Dr K.
The method of encasing magnesium doesn't matter, it is just easier for some ppl to use capsules vs tablets.
I'm a doctor an epidemologist, magnesium oxide won't absorb very much. Magnesium is paired will citrate, oxide etc, some forms help magnesium absorb better. Also, depending on what magnesium is paired with and that's why this trail has different doses. Magnesium oxide usually comes in 400mg per pill. Magnesium taurate usually comes in 120mg.
Id say, use any other magnesium other than magnesium oxide, thats all

Comment from : Dr K.

Why did you not talk about magnesium calm

I had very painful heart palpitations and high blood pressure. After seeing a cardiologist and having every test under the sun. They found nothing wrong with my heart. Prescribed me two different bp meds and sent me on my way. Those meds made me feel terrible but I didn’t know what else to do. They said it was probably hereditary because I am a young healthy male and not overweight and have no health issues. After doing my own research on supplements that are good for heart health. I came across magnesium. So long story short. I am now off the medication. No high blood pressure and no more palpitations. It has worked great for me but I had to experiment like you said. I found that mag oxide does give me loos stool but citrate I can tolerate. So I take citrate. I also had muscle cramps like crazy and those have gone away also.

Then there's Magnesium Carbonate in "Nature's Vitality Calm" and Magnesium Hydroxide (with calcium carbonate) in Extra Strength Rolaids. Magnesium this magnesium that...no one ever explains them very well, and yeah you can't just take them "willy nilly" . It can affect your heart.

My eye lid had been twitching everyday for months and months, was worried something wasn't right, one website says to take zinc, but i'd already been taking zinc for years.
Then I tried magnesium oxide, my eye twitching stopped after 4 days and not returned since.

I have been going through numerous tests with my cardiologist for irregular heartbeats. I take a magnesium supplement which is Boron, magnesium Malate, magnesium Orotate, and magnesium Taurinate. This seems to be vastly helping my irregular heart beats plus I feel like it gives me massive energy. It’s spendy but totally worth the bucks. I tried a different form for my insomnia which is magnesium Bisglycinate and whoa! I felt like I wanted to sleep but it gave me the worst dreams ever. I couldn’t sleep but my body felt like it was drugged up worse than Ny Quil. It was like a magic dream capsule but my experience was far from magical. It’s amazing what different forms of magnesium can do to a person. I threw the Bisglycinate away, I would rather have insomnia personally. I’m sure everyone has a different experience with these supplements, however I think it’s definitely a game changer for me.

Started taking for my memory, which I can definitely tell it's better, & after taking in a short time my palpitations stopped & I'm back to going to the bathroom like a 6th grader. Glad I watched this and that you look well. So, magnesium oxide bad magnesium chloride good? But the stomach contains hydrochloric acid so as soon as magnesium oxide hits the stomach it becomes magnesium chloride! And anyway, main thing is it is a magnesium ion. Why a magnesium ion surrounded by, say, citrate molecule, and presumably larger, should be more absorbable is hard to justify. Maybe comparably absorbable but less likely to cause diarrhea. Good that you question the BS surrounding supplements.

How about Magnesium Malate? Magnesium Malate also has the ability to bind with toxic metals such as Aluminum in the body and render them harmless. I've heard that the best way to take Magnesium is to spray it on the body about half an hour before a shower.

Gerontius
I am taking magnesium lactate, supplied by a British pharmaceutical company.
It has kept my heart steady since I was hospitalized with AF and congestive heart failure three years ago.
The advantage is that the magnesium atom is enclosed (chelated) inside the lactate molecular shell. This enables it to pass easily through the wall of the gut without neutralizing the stomach acid, which can lead to intestinal problems, unlike magnesium oxide which is an alkali. A daily 500 mg tablet contains about 50mg of elemental magnesium and has no apparent side-effects.

I personally take Mag-Malate from Douglas Labs. Mag-Malate tablets provide magnesium and malic acid, two key nutrients involved in energy production and muscular function. Mag-Malate provides magnesium as an Albion glycine/lysine amino acid chelate, which has superior absorption and is highly tolerated. Serving size 1 Capsule

Amount/Serving ........ %DV

Magnesium........... 100 mg..................**

(as magnesium amino acid chelate/oxide)

Malic acid...............400 mg..................**

Suggested:

Adults take one tablet daily or as directed by physician.

I started on oxide, which was hard on my stomach, but switched to citrate. I buy Slo-Mag, 120ct bottles from Amazon for $17, and take 4 daily. I am a kidney transplant recipient, so my meds affect how my body absorbs magnesium, plus I'm on Prilosec, which slows my absorbtion. My blood Mg levels are always low, 1.4, no matter how much magnesium I ingest.
Comment from : Kevin Yancey

Christopher Pooler
Anybody have an idea of what best Mag supplement to take for a vitamin D deficiency? I’m taking Citrate atm. I thought about switching to chelated, bisglycinate, glycinate, or Threonate. I do have depression. Is Threonate a chelated form? Any help is appreciated. My D levels were 15.8 ng/dl. I’ve been feeling horrible. I started with 1x 50,000 IU of D2, did research and started D3 the following week. Past two weeks has been 7,000 IU D3 and the past two days I’ve taken 14,000 IU D3. I felt pretty damn good yesterday, so I’m hoping 14,000 is enough to get me up to 60-80 ng/dl. I’m sure 14,000 seems to be high but I know for a fact 7,000 IU didn’t make me feel any better. I hope I don’t crash this time around. I’m gonna check D levels again after a total of 8 weeks since start date of D. I’m assuming or hope 10,000 IU is my sweet spot. I also take Vit K2 as MK-7. Probably start Vit A soon as well, since all 4 supplements I take work synergistically. Thanks!

Could the varying dosage of the molecules used in a particular study be so as to simply supply the same amount of Mg? Surely 300mg of MgO won't have the same amount of Mg as 300mg of magnesium citrate!

Hello Mr.
† Chagrin & Tonic † , magensium is much better absorbed through the skin...so, oxyde is fine, just rub it on your thighs or abdomen, you won't get any nausea and most of it will travel to your blood... just my 2 cents

Question, I have heart issues so I take both magnesium and potassium. The Mag in particular causes stomach issues and I'm not sure how much I'm really absorbing anyway. What do you think of magnesium through the skin? I have dry magnesium flakes and have considered using it in a water bottle after showers and whatnot. Is this a better way to take in magnesium?
Comment from : Lindy Zee

Magnus Sirius
Magnesium Bisglycinate = Highest Absorption . I also use magnesium chloride sometimes. Magnesium sulfate is good for laxative purpose but it's somewhat too laxative. Never buy some cheap vitamins with magnesium oxide.

Great non biased review on Mg supplements. One thing I wish someone could clear up is the value of homemade Mg bicarbonate....ie, mixing M.O.M with sparkling water under pressure... Not much science on this on the webz but plenty of anecdotal stories.
Comment from : Mobius Trip

Michel Doucet
good for your problem but a very superficial explanation of calcium magnesium relationship role in the body calcium contract the muscles magnesium relax at the cellular level the 4 electrolytes control the opening and closing of the cells doors . you talk to much of magnesium oxyde that is a laxatif and not enough of the real natural magnesium that is magnesium chloride the natural source is the oceans and it is the second residu of sea salt extraction sodium chloride precipitate first and what is left is chloride magnesium (nigari japan ) or some underground source the magnesium oil she is talking about is made with these ....the fact that magnesium oxyde produce a laxative effect is because the body refuse it and expel it with water diareha ....you can now buy Nigari from portugal very inexpensive
but study more the role of the 4 elctrolytes try google scholar insted ordinary google you will have plenty studies .... the kidneys as an example can only excrete calcium if there is suffucient magnesium otherwise it precipitate and make kidney stones (oxalate ) .... the problem of todays diets to much calcium not enough magnesium to pair with it and potassium and sodium deficiencys can lead to hearth arrest to ...in sea water you have the right balance betwen the 4 ....and it is almost the same than in blood of healty people that live close to the ocean and eat lots of seafood ...

Comment from : Michel Doucet

Alex Smith
Many sites recommend malate and chloride, the first being good for fibromyalgia, and the latter, for cell problems but containing less elemental magnesium.
Citrate sounds like a good option, good against oxalate, ie prevents the most common form of kidney stones.

I use Magnesium Malate (MM ()I loved Source naturals brand) , I am hypothyroid and have trouble sleeping and with inflamation. especially in my feet. It is also suppose to be very good for fibromyalgia, my friend thaks it for that. The conbination of the 2 has been a life saver for me, recently though more people are buying it and the price has shot up so now I am looking to take a magnesium supplement and Malic acid separately. Dr Thomas Riley says that Magnesium glycinate is more bioavailable so I might give it a try. I was taking 1200 mg per night of the MM.

Lee S Dryburgh
I've been playing with different magnesium bindings for years and testing somewhat frequently my serum levels. Note there are 3 ways to test blood magnesium levels, each progressively better. The lowest is the ordinary magnesium test. However it seems pretty useless as it's only really checking your body can maintain a Mg homeostasis ie leach from bones if necessary. Much better to use the middle of the road test, "magnesium RBC". Using this I've checked a number of times that a particular brand of oxide raises my serum levels more than most citrates. However for example I'm finding one citrate particularly effective lately, Natural Calm. The effective oxide I use is Magnex. I've tried some very expensive bindings also from strong brand names and began to feel I was not getting enough magnesium and serum levels began to drop. So all in all, try different brands and bindings and test actual blood levels with a magnesium RBC test.

You mention low absorbtion of magnesium via the gut (taken orally). This is a proven fact for most suppliments, as our gut is designed to absorb vitimins from natural (food) sources.
Most will end up down the pan.
Magnesium specifically is best absorbed taken topically (through the skin). Mag. Chloride is a cheap and easy way to do this. There are many utube demos how to make it yourself. It can be bought online for a few pounds to make a years supply. Just add hot water.
